AM AND MP WELCOME MOVES ON AFAN LIDO

Aberavon’s AM and MP, David Rees and Hywel Francis, have welcomed the decision, by Neath Port Talbot CBC, to further defer the decision on the replacement for the Afan Lido to allow a more detailed study of the needs of the town.

Last month, NPT council officers produced a report on the proposals, following a 4 week consultation process, and the cabinet took a view that it did not provide sufficient information to allow a decision. They have now established a task and finish group to look into the proposals in more detail.

David Rees AM has now written to the Chief Executive of the council to get clarification on the remit of the task and finish group and when it will be required to present its findings.

David Rees AM said:

“It is important that this group now takes a fresh look at the replacement for the Afan Lido complex, paying particular attention to which site is the most adequate for the new complex, what facilities are needed to meet the needs of the people of Port Talbot, what funding is available to the project and how the project fits into the strategy for the Aberavon seafront. It is also important that this is done within a short timeframe to ensure that any further delay in its development is minimised.”

“The consultation period showed that the people wanted a fit-for-purpose leisure and sports complex that will contribute to the health and well-being of all who use it, and we support that view. It is critical that the authority now gets this right.”

Dr Francis MP added :
“The local councillors have once again listened to the people they represent and the establishment of a cross party task and finish group now allows a more detailed analysis to be undertaken. We want to see a new Lido complex as a focal point on the seafront as soon as possible and this way forward will ensure that this will be done quickly and in a transparent democratic manner.”
