David Rees, Assembly Member for Aberavon, has today supported the launch of the Kennel Club ‘Chip it, Check it’ campaign, aiming to help save the lives of over 8000 dogs lost every year in the UK. At the launch of the National Micro-chipping Month event, David was pleased to help raise awareness of micro-chipping, which becomes compulsory by law from March 2015.
The Kennel Club, the UK’s organisation largest dedicated to dog welfare, has said that by micro-chipping dogs and keeping personal details up to date, thousands of otherwise doomed dogs could be identified and reunited with their owners instead of facing possible destruction in the pound.
Regulations due to be laid shortly, will place a requirement on owners to have their dogs micro-chipped and registered on one of the databases available. Owners will also be expected to be responsible for ensuring the information is kept up to date in order to have the best chance of reuniting them with their pet.
David said: “I am pleased to support the Kennel Club’s dog micro-chipping campaign. National Micro-chipping Month is an ideal occasion to highlight the many benefits of micro-chipping especially in the countdown to it becoming compulsory. Campaigns like ‘Chip it, Check it’ serve as a vital reminder to all pet owners to check that their information is up to date on the microchip database which will assist in reuniting owners with dogs that have strayed and will help to reduce the stress for both the dog and owner alike.”
National Micro-chipping Month runs throughout June. For more information go to www.nationalmicrochippingmonth.org.uk
