Local Assembly Member David Rees recently visited the re-built blast furnace No. 4 at Tata Steel Port Talbot with the First Minister, Carwyn Jones. The visit to Tata Steel follows a £185 million rebuild of the No 4 Blast Furnace, the largest industrial engineering project undertaken in the UK last year, which has demonstrated Tata Steel’s continued belief in its operations here in Port Talbot and the confidence in its Welsh workforce. Despite the difficult times being experienced by the steel industry internationally, the rebuilt blast furnace at Port Talbot is a substantial investment in the long-term future of the plant.
David Rees AM for Aberavon said: “It was wonderful to see the new blast furnace in operation following this significant investment into Port Talbot. Both the workforce and management must be congratulated in completing this project and re-establishing increased steel making at the site, especially in the current economic climate for global steel markets. This is clearly a statement of confidence in the plant and the excellent employment relationship that exists at the works.”
