AM continues to fight for a safe route to school

David Rees, AM for Aberavon, today joined the Minister for Education, Huw Lewis to cut the sod at the sight of the new 3-16 super school in Sandfields, Port Talbot. The new school will see the merger of Glanafan, Sandfields and Cwrt Sart Comprehensive schools, and will also provide 3-11 education for pupils from Traethmelyn primary school.

Mr Rees stated “It is a pleasure to be invited, along with the Minister for Education to see the start of this new development. The new school will provide pupils with a modern state of the art facility which will provide increased opportunities for our children.

“However, I believe work still needs to be done on providing safe routes to the school. I have been a staunch supporter of local councillors and parents who feel that the walk, from Briton Ferry in particular, follows an unsafe route, and I urge the local authority, once again to reconsider this decision and  its safer routes to school policy. This will not only be an issue for pupils attending the new English medium school, pupils who will be attending Ystalyfera South and the issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible to ensure that the proposed safer routes to schools will accommodate the high numbers of pupils that will need to walk these routes.”
